Personalized Fitness Programming

Once the initial consultation is complete, the Client begins the Integrated Fitness Assessment (IFA)™. The Client is asked to arrive for the two-hour process fully hydrated and having eaten at least 90 minutes prior to the appointment. Comfortable clothing, such as tee shirts, shorts that end above the knee, and sports bras for women, should be worn.

The following is included in the Integrated Fitness Assessment:

Posture assessment - the first step to identifying imbalances in the body that can cause restriction and pain. It simply entails the Client to stand quietly and still, as the Trainer walks around the Client, noting structural and “bony landmarks.”

Comparative joint Range of Motion (ROM) assessment - an easy process with the Client in reclining and sitting positions while the Trainer gently tests range of motion in all joints. The Client will either actively move limbs through their natural range of motion, or will relax and passively allows the Trainer to do so.

Hip mobility and segmental (trunk) gait assessment - to the trained eye, much information can be gathered about the functionality of an individiual's hips and how they move in an integrated fashion with the trunk, just by walking. Therefore, the Client will walk normally and naturally away from, and toward the Trainer 20-30 feet. Hip mobility is also assessed by simply standing and stepping backward with one foot.

The Functional Movement Screen™ (FMS)(videotaped) –  seven basic, fundamental movement patterns that are used in everyday life and sports are fully and carefully examined.   Each movement pattern is rated and ranked according to the quality (or lack thereof) found; the Screen is designed to highlight and "tease out" any movement dysfunction present . This very effective test was developed by a group of renowned physical therapists and provides a benchmark from which to build an exercise program. It can accurately predict an individual’s risk of injury after all the tests are performed and evaluated and an overall score is assigned.

Balance and coordination assessment - a simple single-leg stance test. Ability to balance on one leg versus the other is noted. Among other things, the test is valuable for addressing inner-ear imbalances or cervical (neck) issues that the Client may or may not know about and may involve further investigation by another professional.

Core function assessment - another simple test with the Client in standing and reclining positions to determine how well the core is functioning with and without the conscious activation of the Client. This assessment alone is extremely important in helping a Client move forward with reduced risk of injury in daily activities, sports, and general fitness. Because the core is paramount to the integrity of the human structure, improved core function can help a Client improve their score on all the other tests in the IFA.

Breathing assessment - performed from reclining and sitting positions. Breathing is not only fundamental to sustain life; proper breathing is paramount to a Client’s core function and is an essential component of good posture.
